چکیده

In two recent papers (Adhikari and Woodhouse 2001 Journal of Sound and <ibration 243, 43}61; 63}88), methods were proposed to identify viscous and non-viscous damping models for vibrating systems using measured complex frequencies and mode shapes. In many cases, the identi"ed damping matrix becomes asymmetric, a non-physical result. Methods are presented here to identify damping models which preserve symmetry of the system. Both viscous and non-viscous models are considered. The procedure is based on a constrained error minimization approach and uses only experimentally identi"ed complex modes and complex natural frequencies together with, for the non-viscous model, the mass matrix of the system. The methods are illustrated by numerical examples. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Damping Models for Structural Vibration

This dissertation reports a systematic study on analysis and identification of multiple parameter damped mechanical systems. The attention is focused on viscously and non-viscously damped multiple degree-offreedom linear vibrating systems. The non-viscous damping model is such that the damping forces depend on the past history of motion via convolution integrals over some kernel functions. The ...

Identification of Dynamic Damping Properties of a Flexible Structural Adhesive

In this paper dynamic damping properties of a nominated flexible structural adhesive have been identified using an extended-direct modal based joint identification method. It has been revealed that damping characteristics of adhesive are correlated to both frequency and mode shape. Young’s and shear moduli increase with frequency but damping on the other hand, decrease. The results showed that ...

Steady State and Sign Preserving Semi-Implicit Runge-Kutta Methods for ODEs with Stiff Damping Term

In this paper, we develop a family of second-order semi-implicit time integration methods for systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with stiff damping term. The important feature of the new methods resides in the fact that they are capable of exactly preserving the steady states as well as maintaining the sign of the computed solution under the time step restriction determined by th...

New symmetry preserving method for optimal correction of damping and stiffness matrices using measured modes

Measured and analytical data are unlikely to be equal due to measured noise, model inadequacies, structural damage, etc. It is necessary to update the physical parameters of analytical models for proper simulation and design studies. Starting from simulated measured modal data such as natural frequencies and their corresponding mode shapes, a new computationally efficient and symmetry preservin...
